What is Pickleball?

Why is it called Pickleball?
The story behind the name "Pickleball" is quite interesting. According to Joel Pritchard, one of the inventors of the game, while he and two friends were playing this new sport, his dog named “Pickle” ran off with the ball. From that moment, they decided to call the game “Pickle’s ball” (the ball belonging to Pickle). Over time, people started referring to it simply as Pickleball, and the name eventually became the official name of the sport.
Many people consider Pickleball to be a “hybrid” sport that combines aspects of tennis, table tennis, and badminton. Players use a paddle that is smaller than a tennis racket but larger than a ping-pong paddle, and the ball is small and lighter than a tennis ball.
Is a Pickleball court large?
A Pickleball court is similar in size to a doubles badminton court. The official dimensions of the court are 13.4 meters (length) by 6.1 meters (width). The court is divided into two sides by a central net, which also marks the baseline. One important area on the court is called the non-volley zone, often referred to as "the kitchen."
This non-volley zone extends 2.7 meters from the net on both sides, including the boundary lines and the lines parallel to the net. Additionally, the court features square sections marked by lines, each measuring approximately 0.9 meters, which help define service and playing areas.
The compact size of the court makes Pickleball a fast-paced yet accessible sport, suitable for both indoor and outdoor play.
