How to try stand-up paddleboarding at Mân Thái Beach, Da Nang — best sunrise window, renting vs guided tours, prices, safety and getting there.

Mân Thái Beach is the easiest place in Da Nang to try stand-up paddleboarding for the first time. Tucked into the sheltered curve of the Sơn Trà Peninsula, the water here turns glassy and flat just after dawn. If you want to glide past traditional fishing boats as the sun comes up, you just need to arrive early, rent a board on the sand, and start on your knees.

Mân Thái is a working fishing beach located right below the Sơn Trà Peninsula. The headland shelters this side of the coast, making the sea much calmer at first light compared to the open waves at My Khe and Mỹ An. Calm water is everything when you are learning to balance on a board.
A few details make Mân Thái a great spot for your first paddle:

Mân Thái is a working harbor rather than a polished resort beach. You will share the water with fishermen heading out and coming back. The sand is often covered in nets and gear, and facilities are basic compared to the main tourist strips.
If you want even flatter water with fewer boats, the smaller coves further around the peninsula (toward the Tiên Sa / Bãi Rạng side) are calmer still — but they are harder to reach and have little in the way of services. For most beginners, Mân Thái is the easiest and most central option.
Morning is the only time that matters for paddleboarding. The wind is light at dawn, leaving the sea perfectly flat. By late morning, the breeze picks up and the water gets choppy.
Aim to be on the water by first light. In summer the sun rises around 5:15 to 5:30am (a little later in winter), and the sea is usually at its flattest in the hour or two after sunrise, roughly until 7:30 or 8:00am. Going early also helps you beat the fierce midday heat and the strong sun.
Da Nang's dry, calm season runs roughly from March to August, with May to August giving the warmest sea and the most reliably flat mornings. From September to December the northeast monsoon brings rain and bigger swell, and rough water can shut paddling down for days at a time — September to November is also the main storm window. Check the water the evening before and again at dawn. If the sea looks flat, go paddle. For more on Da Nang's seasons and sea conditions, read our honest guide to swimming safety at My Khe Beach.
You do not need to own a board to paddle at Mân Thái. You can book a tour, rent gear, or bring your own.
This is the easiest choice for beginners. A guide provides the board, paddle, and life vest, teaches you how to stand up safely, and keeps you clear of boat traffic. Most sunrise tours meet right on Mân Thái Beach — a popular one gathers next to the Chợ Cá Gỗ café and starts paddling around 5:00 to 5:15am. Prices are low: one well-reviewed Mân Thái tour lists from about US$12 (roughly 300,000 VND) for a small group of two, and most guided sunrise sessions work out to somewhere around 150,000 to 350,000 VND per person, often including a life vest, snacks, and a freshwater shower afterward. Note that some tours are not suitable for children under 8.
If you have paddled before, renting is cheaper and more flexible. SUP Da Nang runs a board-rental station right in front of Mân Thái Beach, and a few beach cafés rent gear too. Expect roughly 200,000 VND per hour for an inflatable board and around 300,000 VND for a hard board, with full-day rates of about 500,000 to 750,000 VND; the price normally covers the board, paddle, and life vest. Turn up early, check the gear, and compare a couple of spots.
Mân Thái has no entry fee. If you travel with an inflatable SUP, you can launch right from the sand. Just bring your own pump, leash, and life vest. Stay well clear of the working fishing boats.
If it is your first time, book a guided tour. If you already know how to paddle, rent a board by the hour and save some money.
Stand-up paddleboarding is highly accessible. Most beginners are standing within 10 to 15 minutes. Here is how you do it:

You will probably fall in. Just fall away from the board, climb back on from the side, and start again on your knees.
Mân Thái is a safe spot, but it is still open sea next to a working harbor.
Bring a rash guard, board shorts, reef-safe sunscreen, a hat with a strap, drinking water, and a small dry bag for your phone. Leave valuables at your hotel.
Mân Thái is on the eastern side of the Sơn Trà Peninsula. It is very close to the main beach strip and the city center.
Facilities here are basic. Guided tours and the SUP rental station usually offer a freshwater shower and a locker, so booking through them solves the bag-and-rinse problem. Otherwise, public showers and restrooms are limited compared to My Khe, and you may need to rinse off back at your hotel.
A dawn paddle leaves your whole day open. You are in a great spot to explore the rest of the area.

You have two reliable ways to get on the water at Mân Thái:
Always confirm the price and inclusions before you pay.
Is SUP at Mân Thái good for beginners? Yes. The Sơn Trà side is sheltered and the water is usually flat at dawn. Most people are standing within 10 to 15 minutes.
What should I wear and bring? A rash guard, swimwear, reef-safe sunscreen, a hat with a strap, drinking water, and a dry bag. Leave valuables behind.
How much does it cost? Renting a board runs about 200,000 to 300,000 VND per hour (around 500,000 to 750,000 VND for a full day). A guided sunrise tour starts from roughly 300,000 VND for a small group, or about 150,000 to 350,000 VND per person.
What is the best month for paddleboarding here? The dry, calm season from March to August is best, with May to August the most reliable for flat water. Avoid the September-to-December monsoon, when the sea is rougher. Check the sea the evening before and again at dawn.
Can I paddle alone? If you know how to paddle and the water is calm, you can rent a board and go solo. Wear your leash and life vest. Beginners should always join a guided group.
Mân Thái rewards an early alarm. Arrive for the sunrise calm, start on your knees, and keep your eyes on the horizon. You will be gliding across a glassy bay before the city wakes up, leaving plenty of time for a fresh seafood breakfast.
